Sad story with a happy ending!

This story is told by Tobi's AWESOME mom

4/25/2011 just after 2:00pm, Tobi was runover by a Ford F350 HD Truck that was backing to park a horse trailer.  Tobi was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time and was entirely runover.  I heard him crying and came over to see what had happened.  He was obviously in pain, but still coherent and obedient.  He was immediately put in my truck and brought to the Atascadero Emergency Pet Center and was admitted within 10 minutes of the accident.

At first, it wasn't looking good.  He was having difficulty breathing and was going into shock.  He was placed on oxygen and given some hydromorphone.  Once he was out of shock, he was x-rayed.  He had a pretty severe diaphragmatic tear, which was allowing his internal organs to migrate into his chest cavity, stressing his lungs and heart.  It was also determined that his bladder had received some trauma and appeared ruptured.  As far as bones go, his spine looks entirely intact, though he does have 3 or 4 hip fractures.

In order to repair the internal damage, Tobi required a fairly expensive surgery, which we did do.  About a quarter of his diaphragm was torn, but it was repaired.  There was significant trauma and bruising to several internal organs, most notably his small intestines and both kidneys.  Fortunately, his bladder was not ruptured, though bruised.  After 2 full hours of surgery, he came out of it very well and remained stable.

At that point, it was important to figure out if his kidney function was compromised.  So far, he is producing urine, though it is bloody, as should be expected given what he went through.  So we seem okay on that front.

At 5:00 am the next morning, he was doing well and is breathing much more easily.  Jeff and I are cautiously optimistic.

It is crazy because we lost Gwen within a week of Tobi's age now.  It has been all been very deja vu.  Fortunately, this is an entirely different situation from Gwen and Tobi is getting every ounce of veterinary care that he needs in order to make the best recovery he can.

I AM THRILLED TO ANNOUCE THAT TOBI HAS MADE A FULL RECOVERY IN RECORD TIME AND IS BACK AS GOOD AS NEW. hE IS EVEN JUMPING HORSE JUMP AGAIN. hE IS AN AMAZINGLY STRONG DOG!
